"Significant
growth of interest in roof-mounted photovoltaic (PV) installations
among building owners and homeowners in recent years presents roofing
contractors with new opportunities. Roofing contractors are
particularly well-positioned to include "roof-mounted photovoltaic
installer" among their professional competencies because they
appreciate that long-term weather protection will always take
precedence over all other functions as a roof system's primary
function. No other profession involved with the growing "green building
industry" is better qualified to translate that principle into practice
when performing roof-mounted PV system installations. Also, roofing
contractors already are trained to follow safe rooftop work practices
and familiar with health and safety regulations that apply to rooftop
locations and roofing workers."
- Guidelines for Roof-mounted Photovoltaic System Installations, National Roofing Contractors Association
Did you know that the typical U.S. family spends about $1,900 a year on
home utility bills? Unfortunately, a large portion of that energy is
wasted. Each year, electricity generated by fossil fuels for a single
home puts more carbon dioxide into the air than two average cars. And
transportation accounts for 67% of all U.S. oil consumption. The good
news is that there is a lot you can do to save energy and money at home
and in your car. To cut your energy costs, go solar. Also see the Roofing, Insulation, and Ventilation pages for more ways to conserve energy and save money.
There
are two varieties of solar installations for your home or business:
solar thermal and solar electric. Solar thermal is the older water
heating type and is used less
frequently today,
except in the case of pool heating. Solar electric generates
electricity for your home or business and can actually reverse the
direction of your
electric meter, earning you money from the utility company.
Why Use
Done Right for both Roofing and Solar?
When a solar system is installed there is some disruption to your
existing roof. Having an experienced roofing company install your solar
system ensures top of the line roofing skills along with installation
of the best solar system.
If you are
installing a new roof, installing a solar system at the same time makes
sense. It is more efficient and there is less disruption than would be
the case if each were installed separately. You also start saving money
on your utility bills right away.
Finance
and Save
Because
you start
saving money on your utility bill immediately, you can use the savings
to pay off the cost of your solar system, having it pay for itself each
month.
Federal
Tax Credit for Solar Energy and Solar Water Heating
|
If Done Right Roofing and
Solar installs a solar energy system on you home or business in 2011,
you are eligible for a federal tax credit. Federal tax law,
specifically the "Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization
and Job Creation Act," passed in December 2010, provides for these credits. The
home must be your primary existing residence. The credit is for solar energy systems is 30 percent of the total cost including both labor and materials. There is no
income limit to be eligible for the deduction.
A Tax Credit is a direct deduction
from your taxable income after your tax liability is determined. For example, if your tax liability
for 2011 is $10,000 and you are eligible for a $1,500 credit, your
tax liability would be reduced to $8,500. Thirty percent of the cost cost is deducted after you calculate your total taxes.
There are also tax credits available
for certain roofing and insulation. Click the Roofing and/or Insulation
buttons on the left above for specific information. The IRS tax form
5695 for 2011 is apparently not available yet. The IRS page where you
can download forms is here. Use Adobe
Acrobat or
|
SumatraPDF to open
and view any PDF form (click on the red name to download the program). For your records,
keep the receipts from Done Right Roofing and Solar as well as the Manufacturer's Certification
Statement.
The form gives specific
information.
Done Right buys solar energy materials from Solar Depot, a top quality
local
brand. Your receipts specify the products used so you can determine
your eligibility and keep them with your tax records.
The
California page with rebate estimators is here.
The P G & E guides and forms are here. Glenn will help you estimate your rebate and show you your expected savings projections.
The Owens-Corning
attic insulation and some of the CertainTeed Roofing products that Done
Right Roofing and Solar uses also
qualify for the tax credit. Insulation can reduce heating and cooling
costs
by up to 20 percent. Click here
or on the Roofing button on the left and here
or on the Insulation button on the left for specific rebate
information.

How Solar Power Works Step 1: Roof Solar
Panels
The panels are typically mounted on the roof of your home. They are photovoltaic
cells. Photovoltaic cells convert sunlight directly into electricity. At this point it is still direct current electricity.
Step 2: An Inverter
The
electricity goes to an electrical device called an inverter. The
inverter changes it to alternating current like the electricity coming
from the power company.
Step 3: To the Electrical Panel
When
the now alternating current electricity leaves the inverter, it goes to
the panel where it can be used in your home. Typically the inverter and
panel are located close to each other. The electricity from the power
company also goes through the panel before entering your home. Some
people call the panel the breaker.
Step 4: Your Electrical Meter is Read by the Power Company
When
the solar panels make more electricity than you use, the meter goes
backwards. In other words, you are not using any power from the power
company and you are sending electricity back to them. When you sign up
for this (see link to P G & E above), the power company reduces
your bill. If you send them more power during the month than you use,
you build up credits or they pay you depending on the policies in place
with your power company.
Step 5: Why Stay Hooked Up to the Power Company?
Even if you produce more power than you use, that is not true for every minute
of the day. At night you are not producing power and you need a source
of electricity to run clocks, refrigerators, computers, televisions,
and a lot of other devices which need it to function. You stay
connected to have access to the electricity. There are battery-powered systems which
can eliminate the need to stay connected. These are used primarily in
rural areas where no utilities exist. They involve added expense. In
addition, most cities will not allow a home to be disconnected fro the
power grid.
